10 Common Mistakes To Avoid When Using LED Grow Lights

Modern and sustainable farming is quite dependent on technologies like LED lights in order to maximize profit and grant higher yields without negatively affecting the environment. In order to achieve a certain result in plant growth, the farmers need to make sure they are using the LED grow lights properly and efficiently. Here is a list of the most common mistakes growers make with LEDs and how to avoid them to activate the full potential of your lighting installation.

1. Buying Inferior Lights

Proper lighting stimulates the photosynthesis process of plants. Its quality and spectrum coverage is extremely important in order to grow healthy plants. Since LED grow lights covers the full sun spectrum, there is no need to add any inferior lights. The best LED grow lights on the market are able to provide just the sufficient amount of light for a healthy growth. For a better harvest result, farmers should count on the main lighting source of LEDs which are specific to plant growing.

2. Overwater When Changing Lights

One of the most significant differences between LED grow lights and regular HID lights is heat generation. With HID, the high heat emissions could lead to drought of the soils and burn of the plants, so farmers have to water the crops more often. LED lights, on the other side, are generating no infrared light and emit way less heat, so overwatering is unnecessary and can even hurt the plants.

3. Overheating the Plants

Temperature is an important factor in a plant’s healthy cultivation and should not be ignored. Similarly to overwatering, overheating is also a red flag we have to consider and work to avoid. Heat management starts with observations on greenery’s conditions. If a grower sees that the leaves which are situated close to the light start turning yellowish or brownish, the plant is overheating. When such a situation arises, farmers need to make a proper adjustment of the lighting and provide good ventilation, in order to save their product.

4. Supplying Insufficient Lighting

Proper illumination of the plants is crucial for their well-being. For that reason, cultivators need to consider the scale of the horticultural project and calculate how much LED light would be sufficient for all the plants they are growing. As an example, a 200W LED lamp provides enough light exposure for a yield of 100 grams. Growers have to maintain the lighting and always make sure they are supplying just the perfect amount of lighting.

5. Adjusting the Distance Incorrectly

Placing the LED lights too close or too far from the greenery, will likely result in overheating or insufficient lighting. Adjusting the fixtures at a proper distance from the plants is a process that should not be neglected because it leads to a low quality final produce or even the loss of it. The recommended distance between the LED grow lights and the plants is 12 to 18 inches.

6. Using the Wrong Spectrum

For ultimate growth of plants, it is imperative that the spectrum of light be adjusted often, according to the current growth stage of each crop. With solutions like full spectrum LED grow lights those settings have never been easier to manage. Choosing the wrong light spectrum could lead to development issues. For example, through the vegetative stage, most plants benefit from blue light. If you set a red light exposure during this growth stage – you will negatively affect a plant’s development.

7. Choosing the Wrong Schedule

Scheduling is a big time-saver and helps growers to accurately manage the lighting. The person responsible for scheduling should always be aware of what is happening in the growing room. It is important not to forget to turn the lights on or off. A drastic change in scheduling may have a negative impact on the plant’s production.

8. Not Adjusting the Lights as Your Plants Grows

Adjusting the correct light spectrum according to the growth stage of the crops is essential and vital, but sometimes farmers do the correct spectrum settings and forget to adjust the height of the lights and to occasionally rotate the pots. As plants get bigger, the distance between the greenery and the LED light should get relatively bigger. Otherwise, the plants may end up with burnt leaves. The best LED grow lights for cannabis cultivation should provide 12 hours of light during flowering and 18-24 hours during vegetation.

9. Not Maintaining the Lights Regularly

LED grow lights are changing the horticultural habits of growers for the better. They are a long-term investment that is revolutionizing the way we grow plants with artificial lights. So growers should take proper care and maintain the LED panels and features regularly.

10. Focusing Only on the Lights and Not on Other Growing Factors

The photosynthesis would not be possible without lighting so it’s safe to assume that lights are the most important plant growth factor. However, even partially neglecting other factors like watering, nutrients, temperature, ventilation and soil and plant genetics could be detrimental. Such carelessness could potentially harm the greens and negatively affect their overall health.
